Thanksgiving is usually a time of tradition for families. I make Italian Wedding Soup and it must be cooked in a particular way and not deviate from the recipe by one iota or Grandma Bette will let me hear about it until next Thanksgiving. Grandma Perez expects all girls to wear dresses on Thanksgiving(!). Papa Tom will tell stories about hunting his own turkeys as a child with his trusty bird dog , Gus. Heather and Olivia will be in charge of clean up duty as they are the oldest of the youngest nonmarried girls in the family this year. My sister,Betty will put up her Christmas tree after dinner.
What are your traditions? If you do not know- ask an elder or parent during Thanksgiving dinner.
Since there are three major holidays, Christmas, Thanksgiving, and Easter and since there is my mom and my two uncles every year they pick which holiday they want at their house. This year Thanksgiving is at my house. The other tradition we have when it comes to the holidays is that my Aunt Robin makes all the desserts. She is the baker in the family, so she is the one that makes all the desserts, from cookies, to pies, to cakes! You name whatever you like and she can make it for you. My Aunt Linda always makes her homemade salad too. It is nothing too special, but she makes the best dressing! We always have chestnuts on Thanksgiving and Christmas too. Since we are Italian we always have to have some kind of pasta dish!
ReplyDeleteEvery year at Thanksgiving we get together at my Aunt Dora’s house. I have a big family so everyone brings a dish. My grandma prepares the turkey in her special Salvadorian way and my Aunt Rosa brings another turkey made in her own way. My mom and my other aunts bring side dishes and the older cousins bring the desserts and drinks. The younger cousins drag the older cousins to play games with them while the adults talk. When its time for dinner the kids and teenagers go first and the adults follow. Once everyone has their food we pray and give thanks for the food we have and the family that we are able to share it with. When we finish eating we just spend the rest of the night enjoying each others company.
ReplyDeleteEvery year for Thanksgiving we usually go to my grandparents house and everyone from both sides of the family comes over but this year we did it differently. This year we were at my house and that is how the tradition is going to go from now on because my grandma is getting older and my grandpa has a hard time doing things. This year I helped my mom cook the dinner and we had a lot of fun at my house. It was good for our side of the family to get together and celebrate the little time we have left with my grandpa.
ReplyDeleteWhen Thanksgiving Day comes, there are three musts, all the family has to be there, you have to bring something and the turkey has to be good. As far as traditions go, we don’t really have a lot, but some hold strong to this day. Football is always on, and we all catch up with each other’s lives while food cooks. We then pray and eat and eat and eat. And the only other thing I can really think of is solitaire, vicious, aggressive games of solitaire. Imagine the game you play on the computer, its calming and slow moving, but at our thanksgivings, there fast and confusing and loud. The once peaceful game is turned into a free for all. Fueled by turkey and green beans, brothers, sisters, aunts, parents and grandparents duel to the death for the glory of the day. From several rooms away you can hear the slamming of cards on the table and screams and yells of defeat and triumph fill air. Even watching the spectacle would amaze you.
ReplyDeleteTraditions in my family go for almost every major holiday such as Christmas, Thanksgiving, and Easter. The day of the holiday we celebrate with my mom's family andthe day after is my dad's side of the family. During Thanksgiving we celebrate my birthday along with my brothers with each side of the family. During Christmas we have a family gift exchange on both sides of my family. Everyone picks a random name and gets that persons list. When we clebrate Christmas is wen you recieve your gift or gifts from your person.
ReplyDeleteEvery Thanksgiving I spend time with my moms side of the family at my Great Grandmothers house. All my aunts, uncles and cousins come over and we share a big thanksgiving feast. Usually each set of family members are required to bring a dish (like a potluck). My mom always makes pasta salad and brings the honey baked ham. After everyone is done eating we sit in the living room and just talk to each other and catch up. Most of the time the guys are watching a football game and the women are playing cards. At the end of the night we say our good byes and head our separate ways until Christmas morning.
ReplyDeleteEvery Thanksgiving it is either at my house or my mom's sister's, or brother's. Then after dinner we go to my dad's sister's. But at my uncles we always have so much to eat! Since we are Italian my dad always makes the pasta. My mom and her sister love to bake so they each make a pumpkin pie, and a bunch of other desserts. When we get to my uncles we always help get everything ready. Then after dinner we just talk and hangout, the guys usually watch football and then all of the women clean up until another mess is made. Then we just sit around and talk. The Saturday after Thanksgiving we get back together and make raviolis for our christmas dinner.
ReplyDeleteFor Thanksgiving my family has a very simple tradition. Everyone on my dad’s side of the family goes to my Grandma’s house. My Grandma makes all kinds of food for us. Any type of Thanksgiving food that you can think of will be there. In this tradition our family likes to play squares on the football games. When my grandparents win they usually just give their winnings to the grandchildren. We also have a huge tradition in playing LCR. This year I actually won. I won fifteen dollars in quarters.
ReplyDeleteEach Holiday is always spent at my grandparent's house. My grandparents do all of the cooking, and will not let anyone else help. My grandpa cooks the turkey, and the secret apple pie. The apple pie is a secret because the recipe has been passed down through each man in the family. Soon the recipe will be passed down to my dad, and then when my dad becomes old, he will pass it down to me. My grandmother always eats the giblets from the turkey. I think it is disgusting. My grandmother cooks the ham and the mashed potatoes. The mashed potatoes are my favorite. We usually just watch football, and play games. The adults were playing with the wii, but I hate the wii so I just went in the basement and played xbox on the big-screen.
ReplyDeleteFor thanksgiving we always go to my uncle’s house with my mom's side of the family. Usually we have a ton of people over, but this was the first year only a few people came. We all get together at about noon and start making dinner. After we eat my mom and I clean up. Then we all just hang out. We leave early because the next day my uncles start to work at their Christmas tree lot.
ReplyDeleteFor thanksgiving my brother and I go over to our grandparents house. My grandmother usually has to work on thanksgiving so we eat around 3. My grandfather makes the turkey. My aunt brings the pies. While we are waiting for dinner my cousins and I play cards or games. When we get home my mother, brother and I go bowling or to the movies.
ReplyDeleteSome traditions are that for half the time ill go to my moms side of the family and the other half ill go to my dads. Although my dad couldnt make it this year for Thanksgiving so i just spent it with my moms side of the family. My grandma always hosts thanks giving and family all comes over there. She has a huge dinning room table that everyone sits around and the kids sit at the kitchen table. My grandpa makes the bird and mashed potatos and my grandma makes the rest even a homemade pumpkin pie that i get to help with. After were all done stuffing our faces we go in the living room and watch a movie in the past years weve also gone to the movie theater. While the movie is going on of course I fall asleep my grandma said its cause or the ingredient thats in the turkey. After the movie we all go back to the table and stuff our faces with desserets and have alot of family discussions. Its alot of fun spending time with my family even when I dont realize it.
ReplyDeleteEvery year for thanksgiving my family from all over the world come to my grandmas house. Family from Africa, Turkey, China, and all over the United States come to spend time with other family. Certain people are assigned to different dishes. The person who does that dish the best cooks it every year until someone comes up with a better dish. We all play basketball all day,or volleyball, or even go swimming in the back yard. I love thanksgiving at my grandmas house.
ReplyDeleteEvery year during Thanksgiving, my family likes to keep things simple. All we do is travel to my grandmothers house on my mom side of the family first. Then, after eating a delicious feast, made by my aunt, we head over to my other grandmothers house. When we arrive we eat again and sit down and watch the football games being played that evening.
ReplyDeleteWe do not have any really tradition for Thanksgiving. Most of the time my grandmother comes of and bakes rolls then my uncle, cousins, and brothers come over. We have turkey, stuffing, rolls, macaroni, greens, and whatever dessert we have.
ReplyDeleteMy family we would start cooking around 10 in the morning and about 5 o'clock in the afternoon we all sit down and enjoy the wonderful meal my dad had made. He makes a fresh turkey, hold made stuffing, hold made sweet potatoes, green beans cash rolls, mash potatoes, rolls, and finally the desert which is usually pie. Also we watch the football games.
ReplyDeleteThe same way most families have special traditions around the holiday time, as does my family. We never like the holidays to be all hustle and bustle. What we really enjoy is the time of peace and quiet to spend with one another and enjoy each others company. For the most part a great deal of my family lives out of state so they quickly make the journey to my home and before you know it, the entire house is filled with familiar faces of all ages. Laughing, talking, and carrying on. Usually we have an early dinner, around 4 in the afternoon or so, and we all sit down for a huge family and everyone eats their fill. After we all eat, almost within minutes, everyone is out like a light, asleep on couches, chairs, and mattresses, except for mine of course as no one sleeps in my bed, ever. Everyone wakes up, has some delicious pie, and heads their separate ways for another year.
